Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit, multi-specialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical & hospital care with research & education. The Clinic runs a 170-acres campus in Cleveland, as well as 11 affiliated hospitals, 19 family health centers in Northeast Ohio, and hospitals in Florida and Nevada. Outside the United States, Cleveland Clinic also operates the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi hospital and an outpatient sports medicine clinic in Toronto. A Cleveland Clinic hospital campus in London, England, is scheduled to open in 2021. It has nearly 1,300 beds on their main campus and 6,026 beds system-wide.
The environment consisted of a variety of equipment from OEMs such as IBM, HP, Sun, Cisco, and EMC.
Cleveland Clinic wanted a data center relocation handled in a way that minimized disruption of hospital operations. The move had to be done in a way that accommodated current scheduled maintenance windows so as to make the migration transparent to the outside world.
A detailed analysis of their current environment was performed, and the applications were mapped to their required infrastructure. The mappings were then divided-up into groups and each group was sized to fit into an existing maintenance window. The groups were then organized into move events. A data center relocation plan was then developed for each move event.
